I also think the underlying cause of the riots were political as well (although i seem to contradict my previous post) but not in the political sense politicians understand.

I agree with you. I think the underlying cause of the riots was political. While the inequalities and injustices persist we must expect repeats and worse.

Present government policy has nothing to do with free markets and individual liberty. It’s about the oligarchy of politicians, bankers and media maintaining its power and privilege.

well, at one time i was led to believe that the Conservatives were for free markets and individual liberty – my oh my how times change

Instead of admitting that we live in one of the most un-equal countries in western Europe and try to address the anarchy we saw on the streets of London 2 weeks ago, what do our free market thinking centre right Government do?

Crack down with a sledge hammer against any kind of dissent

The rioters were not political, if they had smashed the banks i think a lot more people would have come out in support of there pent up anger – but the government is trying to send a wider msg – any kind of dissent or dissolution – we will crack down on you so hard you will never think about every doing it again – same as it ever was throughout history

wake me up when we actually become a democracy – because we are light years away from one….

Luckily, i am married to a women from a former British colony – Malta – and i spent a decade there – so i got a glimpse of what real freedom and a new modern democracy really is – far cry from what we have

Party politics aside, the 1 thing torys do seem to respond well to is businesses making lots of money and paying lots of tax!
In fact they want to encourage manufacturing so could growing for export be another avenue?

Peter is right that we shouldn’t jump to conclusions!! We need to stop this debate descending into an issue of LEFT or RIGHT…..but instead focus the debate on RIGHT AND WRONG! This shouldn’t be a debate that is guided by competing ideologies, that is why a Royal Commission is what is needed…the issue needs to be removed from the hands of ‘politicians’! I wish we had the support of cannabis users, if 4 million did stand up and be counted then this wouldn’t be an issue anymore!!

You may be guilty of a little prejudice and jumping to conclusions yourself. Personally, I think Nigel Farrage is a very long way from being a lunatic and UKIP has a very progressive policy on drugs. Take a look at this interview with him:

We are far more likely to get reform under a right of centre government than under socialism. Individual liberty and free markets are far more likely to see cannabis liberalised than the nanny state, big governments of the left.

things wont change, most of our MP’s made there mind up ages ago, to them (Tory) Cannabis is no diff from heroin – our politicians have failed us, Lib Dems were the last bastion of hope – but even they have capitulated – someone needs to remind the Tories that they did not win the election and would not win another one – Lib Dems have finished themselves – Clegg may as well wind up the party, i would imagine UKIP will have a strong showing in 2015 if the coalition lasts that long – Farrage is a lunatic and probably holds equal draconian views on Cannabis

ignore the law until the police get tired of dealing with it – they must hate having to use dwindling man power to clean up big cannabis ops

It’s worse than that, these aren’t necessarily on-board. They are just MP’s that have shown a willingness to consider law reform in one way or another. Some are being wooed by the prohibition lobby.
