The MPs Campaign
The CLEAR guide to lobbying MPs – here
List of target MPs – here
The only people in Britain who can change the law are MPs. They are, therefore, CLEAR’s most important audience. This is the best example of how modern cannabis campaigning has changed. Progress does not come from blowing smoke in a policeman’s face, it comes from engaging with the system and advancing what is an overwhelmingly powerful argument with patience and determination.
Shortly we will publish here a database of every MP, his or her position on cannabis, cross-referenced with CLEAR membership by constituency. We plan a systematic campaign of lobbying and persuasion. We will find out where we need to focus our greatest effort and which arguments to deploy.
In the meantime, we have prepared a series of template letters which you can send to your MP. The cannabis issue is very complex and there are a lot of different messages to get across. Some MPs will respond better to one message than another. The best thing to do is choose the letter that appeals to you most. You can send it exactly as it is or you can edit it and add your own words. The most important thing is to do it!
Remember, you can email your MP but snail mail in an envelope with a stamp tends to get more attention. You can always do both!
And don’t just do this once. Write regularly to your MP and make him/her realise that you will not vote for someone who supports prohibition.
To find out who your MP is and their email address/postal address go to this page and enter your postcode into the box (service provided by “They work for you”)
As well as your local MP, it’s worth contacting these MP’s who have voted or supported more progressive policies or motions.
Template Letters To MPs
Each letter addresses the cannabis issue from the starting point of one of the key issues featured on the CLEAR home page.
