Home Affairs Select Committee Inquiry Into Drugs Policy – Hearing 22nd March 2012

    Home Affairs Select Committee

    WATCH THE MEETING HERE

There are a few interesting points about cannabis earlier on in the session, mainly from Dr Claire Gerada.

    11:19  “The gateway theory”

11:21  “I wouldn’t recommend cannabis to anyone” (I shall be writing to Dr Gerada and the committee about her evidence that cannabis causes a number of health problems)

    11:26  About the dispensary model

11:38  ”I don’t see a lot of problem cannabis users”

    • Ian Singleton

Interesting so this is what it looks like when these things are discussed it was interesting that Dr Gerada said she didn’t see many problem cannabis users that’s rather telling, even though she is pretty anti cannabis that kind of speaks for itself.

I couldn’t quite  work out where she got her facts from, Cannabis is not a good drug and causes lung cancer? And is addictive

yep ok Doc, you wanna think about that next time you prescribe an opiate for pain relief

On another note, i get the feeling the committee seemed like they want to decrim cannabis

Maybe it’s just my wishful thinking

the problem with this is that it is just a great big talking shop…whatever the merits of the argument this issue will be decided on political expediency..no politicians are going to risk the daily mail screaming and ranting and naming names of anti prohibition mps…keith vaz has already made one or two political blunders and i dont see him making another…this will end up with a few watered down soft recommendations which wont be implemented…thats what i think and i hope i am wrong

according to the garada woman cannabis causes throat cancer…when you write to her peter ask her to contact all the sativex users worldwide so that she can prevent then from getting throat cancer…a letter to GW may be a good idea… see  what they think of their mouthspray

Cannabis causes cancer ha ha ha i would love to see any evidence and figures of people getting cancer due to cannabis.

Cannabis causes cancer? Are you serious? This must be corrected immediately. How can she get away with saying this without facts to support them? Should she not be checked on false and misleading information?

    • Ian Singleton

yes I thought that for a doctor she seemed to be quite ill informed of the facts.  At least some of the people there seem to have a slightly better idea of what cannabis actually is.

      “…
It is known that THC and CBD are biomimetic to anandamide, that is, the body can use both interchangeably. Thus, when stress, injury, or illness demand more from endogenous anandamide than can be produced by the body, its mimetic exocannabinoids are activated. If the stress is transitory, then the treatment can be transitory. If the demand is sustained, such as in cancer, then treatment needs to provide sustained pressure of the modulating agent on the homeostatic systems.Typically CBD gravitates to the densely packed CB2 receptors in the spleen, home to the body’s immune system. From there, immune cells seek out and destroy cancer cells. Interestingly, it has been shown that THC and CBD cannabinoids have the ability to kill cancer cells directly without going through immune intermediaries. THC and CBD hijack the lipoxygenase pathway to directly inhibit tumor growth. As a side note, it has been discovered that CBD inhibits anandamide reuptake. Here we see that cannabidiol helps the body preserve its own natural endocannabinoid by inhibiting the enzyme that breaks down anandamide. This brief survey touches lightly on a few essential concepts. Mostly I would like to leave you with an appreciation that nature has designed the perfect medicine that fits exactly with our own immune system of receptors and signaling metabolites to provide rapid and complete immune response for systemic integrity and metabolic homeostasis.~Dennis Hill”See his video testimony & interview:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q7ytJu4Zcrkhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UIxSQZZKIgsWARNING!! This from 2005 (see link) : ”More worrying, Dr Gerada said, was the increase in super-strong versions of the drug, known as skunk. “The truth is, genetically modified forms of the drug are the norm,” she said. The aim of the meeting is to give a voice to the thousands of GPs struggling to cope with the side-effects – often mental illnesses – of cannabis users.”  >>>>  http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/1481281/Doctors-warn-of-cannabis-link-to-mental-illness.html

I wonder if she still believes this?

    • http://www.peter-reynolds.co.uk Peter Reynolds

It’s inconsistent with what she said this week isn’t it?

I have written to her two or three times in the last year trying to engage with her on medicinal cannabis but she has never responded.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Maharg-Smith/831904195 Maharg Smith

failure to respond is a standard operating mode for the medical profession in general …..if the boss of the doctors is giving out contradictory statements to news outlets and home office committees then surely this is news? do you know of any journalists or radio stations who would ask her for an interview? she may be more inclined to respond to a bona fide press enquiry or perhaps we could seek a response from the royal college of general practitioners

another howler…is this woman fit for purpose??

“With cannabis more pop-ular than tobacco and higher potencies more
widely available than before, it is time we looked again at the health
      risks,” said Dr Gerada
