Subject: Complaint against the Belfast Telegraph, issue dated 23rd June 2011

    Dear Sirs,

“Time to get tough on drug law, Shannon to urge MPs”, the Belfast Telegraph, 23-06-11

I wish to make a complaint concerning the above article which is still available online at: http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/community-telegraph/north-down/news/time-to-get-tough-on-drug-law-shannon-to-urge-mps-16015285.html

I make the complaint on my own account but also in my capacity as the Leader of Cannabis Law Reform (CLEAR), a UK political party, of P.O.Box 674, Salfords, Redhill, RH1 9BN. For the purposes of correspondence, please use my personal address as below.

    1. This article breaches the Editors’ Code Of Practice clause 1.i) in that it publishes inaccurate, misleading and distorted information.

    2. It also breaches clause 1.iii) in that it fails to distinguish clearly between comment, conjecture and fact.

    3. The article is presented as a news story, not an opinion piece. It should therefore be concerned only with facts – unless comment or conjecture is clearly distinguished.

    4. Although the article is presented as a report of what Charles Walker and Jim Shannon have said, that cannot absolve the newspaper from its responsibilities under clause 1.i) and 1.iii).

    5. In the sixth paragraph, the article states “Mr Shannon said at the debate: ‘In Northern Ireland, we have seen a rash of suicides as a result of this very drug.’” This is inaccurate, misleading and distorted information for which there is no basis in fact. Mr Shannon may have been protected by parliamentary privilege when he spoke this untruth but the newspaper is not.

    6. In the seventh paragraph, the article states In an interview with the Community Telegraph Mr Shannon said: “Charlie Walker MP, mentioned a number of people who have died of cannabis psychosis…” This is inaccurate, misleading and distorted information that has no basis in fact. No one has ever died “of” cannabis or psychosis.

    7. These statements by Mr Shannon are clearly designed to frighten, create panic and promote prejudice on the basis of falsehood and deception. To publish them without higlighting their gross inaccuracy and clearly distinguishing them as wild, extremist and false is to be complicit in them with Mr Shannon.

I would be grateful if you would deal with this complaint at your earliest convenience. I shall be happy to provide any further information required or to give oral evidence in support.

    Yours faithfully,

    Peter Reynolds

Isn’t this at risk of being a bit null and void now? From the looks of things the PCC may be one of the many lambs being fed to appease the grand and almighty Murdoch. It would seem to me that if the PCC goes under any previous correspondence you’ve had with them could be conveniently ignored by whatever organisation is put in it’s place. There is the possiblity that the PCC’s replacement could be better ran but, to be quite frank, I’m not going to hold my breath.

Danny, I don’t think its null and void. These complaints seem to be having an effect, so much so that they are having to help out editors to try counter claims. If there is a consultation for a new body the evidence collected by CLEAR can be presented in just how ineffective it has become and help push tougher press reforms too.. or am I just being too optimistic..? They can’t ignore us forever!

I’m quite certain it is important to keep doing this Danny.  The way to win the war on prohibition is to keep on, keep on, keep on fighting.  Even when it seems hopeless, we need engage in the debate and keep on, keep on telling the truth

My worry was more that if the PCC did go belly up, there’d be no use to you having bashed away at them for so long. Yet looking through Jake042′s post below I think it was a case of me not thinking outside the box. I have some cynicism on whether these complaints will make much of a difference with editors, as was kind of proved with your recent issues with the PCC. However, having a decent back catalogue of reasonable complaints is certainly not something to be sniffed at. Evidently it’s in no way null or void, keep on, keeping on!

we must demand a fair and unbiased replacement and hound them equally

I have complained about the Belfast Telegraph several times now to the PCC and have never got a reply but it wont stop me from complaining !! Peter is 100% right , things are not going to change if the cannabis smokers / medicinal users dont stand up and make their voices heard . If the PCC receives complaints on a daily basis about the same things being printed in news papers they will have to take some kind of action , after all we are using the facts and evidence while MPs , news papers and so on rely on fiction and propaganda  . Keep at them Peter .

Sadly in Northern Ireland this is the kind of numskull thinking which prevails. People have no sense here on drugs, the old chestnut of “drugs destroy lives” is proudly emblazoned on many a crumbling gable wall – and MPs who champion “tough on drugs” win easy points from the ignorant masses.

Add to that the fact that drugs are all mixed up with the paramilitaries – and you’ve even more cowardice from MLAs on drugs than you get in the mainland.

Half the MPs in NI are in or used to be in the paramilitaries , they are all a bunch of corrupt fuckers here . You would think an MP would want to cripple the UDA / IRA etc by taking away their MAIN INCOME – DRUGS   the profits are used to by guns and parts for bombs to kill people / PSNI . But Nooooooo were told its the drugs that destroy !! I find the best approach when sending an MP an email about cannabis is to post them loads of scientific proof first from leading researchers on the effects of cannabis then i hit them with an email asking every question they dont want to hear or answer . Its far harder for them to spin propaganda and lies when they have been sent the FACTS and EVIDENCE the week before . But some of them  ( Jeffrey Donaldson mla ) are more interested in people liking him and his personal bank account it would be nice for an MP here to grow some balls stand up and speak out .

Someone may want to inform these pseudo-politicians that most intelligent people understand that the vilified skunk which they keep going on about is the very same substance which GW Pharmaceuticals requested and was granted licence for, for the treatment of M.S.
1930′s reefer madness propaganda does nothing but reinforce the view that most politicians are just self serving, vote chasing liars.
My advice to Charles Walker and Jim Shannon is simple.
      ALWAYS READ THE LABEL…!
