That's what I was getting at. I have no choice, I cannot smoke in my company car because of company policy so I don't, but I do things which have a higher "risk factor" that are permitted.

The BMA should be calling for all alcohol advertising to be removed from sports events and then a creaping general ban on alcohol advertising (like they did for tobacco) as that would protect childern better than a few irresponsible adults smoking in the car with their kids inside it.

I'd prefer the GMA to be asking for a ban on giving alcohol to minors. Presently, any adult can give any child (older than four) any amount of any kind of alcohol behind closed doors. With what's well- known about alcohol's addictiveness, and what's recently emerged about its carcinogenicity, a blanket presumption of consent by British children to take this lethal drug seems outrageous and perverse.

I obviously didn't make myself as clear as I should have.I do not believe either that you should be allowed to smoke in a car when children are present.
I also believe that you should ask for permission to light up, even if the car is yours,if there is a passenger in the car who is not a smoker.
However I believe this particular ban would involve adults alone in their own cars.I don't think anyone would agree with that, unless there is a potential accident case to be addressed.

If driving with a lit cigarette can be shown to pose an accident risk then another way around it would be to allow only E-cigarettes to be used in a car. That way no harm can be done to passengers or other road users.

Using a sat nav can and has caused accident's as well as changing radio stations.Where do we draw the line?Once we allow the state to take more control away from us, then who knows where it will stop.

I have a company car & we're not allowed to smoke in them anyway. I've got a big pot of gum where the ashtray used to sit...

They'll be banning chewing gum next.

And why not ban radio's, CD players as loads of accidents are caused by people fiddiling with them while driving.

Banning stuff makes MP's feel important & as we all know prohibition works so well!

I agree that that everyone should have the freedom to do as they wish with themselves..... However, I do not think it is right that smoking around others that have no choice but to be there (like children in a car) is right.

I once had the misfortune of nearly setting my car on fire by flicking a cigarette out of the drivers side window. It failed to exit the car and flew back inside and almost started a fire in the back seat.Luckily I was on a residential road and could stop safely.I had some water at hand so I doused the seat and the damage was very minimal.
My point is that if the reason to ban smoking in cars was because of situations like this, then I probably would agree.I have heard that accidents, even fatalities have been caused by cigarettes setting light to cars, sometimes while on motorways.

Otherwise I strongly believe that a person has the right to smoke if they wish and no one should try to force them to stop.
My advice to any smoker would be to give up if you want to, if the enjoyment is gone or your health is suffering. If however you enjoy smoking and don't want to quit then don't!

I gave up over 7 years ago because I no longer enjoyed the habit/addiction and it was taking it's toll on my health. Also I had the realization that there was a much more pleasant herb I enjoyed smoking more than tobacco and it caused far less harm than the nasty nicotine. It was the best decision I ever made. Now I can taste not only food better but also my weed!
