To Namkha, Why are you so concerned about staying with the UN convention on narcotics — rather than staying with it, it light of the evidence that cannabis as many medical benefits, the UN convention should be scrapped. It clearly should never have been in the first place. The history of why cannabis was made illegal had NOTHING to do with science-based evidence and everything to do with racism, corporate greed/control, and shear lies. Had this plant been fully utilized for all of its commercial benefits, this planet might not be in the mess that it is. As far as I am concerned, no government has the right to tell me what I can grow and put into my own body — that is a dictatorship. And this is coming from a person who has never used it in his life … but wants that option should I SO CHOOSE!

Hi Peter – I think you may have misjudged my tone – that was a genuine admission that I was wrong. I wasn’t being sarcastic. I think you’d do well to debate with me. The reform movement needs to start getting clearer about what it wants. When it comes to reforming the law, we are both on the same page. It’s what happens next that we need to start getting serious about. I am not persuaded that market competition has anything to offer cannabis. Since you think otherwise, I genuinely want to know why.

Hi Peter – in all sincerity I was asking you to articulate why you want a free market in cannabis. I also asked you to explain how you think the Cannabis Social Club system could possibly be reconcilable with a liberalised market, as that is what it is expressly designed to avoid.

You’re right, I was completely wrong. I have no idea how many applications have been submitted to the Home Office to grow non-hemp cannabis strains, other than the two you have just mentioned (I was mis-remembering something I read about the MHRA never having received any applications to market ‘naturally grown formats’.)

That said, to be fair, the fact that your applications were rejected doesn’t constitute proof that GWPharma have been granted a ‘unique monopoly license’.

If my tone appears scathing, it isn’t meant to: if GWPharma are as bad as you say they are, I sincerely want to know about it. But like most people reading this I need to see the proof. Without seeing evidence, it’s very hard to take your article seriously. The fact that you’ve first gone ahead and published these claims as is, without substantiating them, thus far doesn’t look good.

You say that you ’believe [Cannabis Social Clubs] could work alongside a commercial production and distribution network.’ It would be great to hear How, and indeed Why, as on the face of it is a genuinely absurd suggestion. It’s a pity you’ve chosen to engage with my admittedly rather strong language when instead you could have come back at me with some evidence-based reasoning to counter my arguments. Your replies above are all mere assertions, and give zero reasons. I am genuinely interested to hear your rationale, and I am concerned at the minute that it looks rather like you don’t have one.

I disagree with you.

I am very familiar with Martín Barriuso’s work and articles on cannabis clubs and I do believe they could work alongside a commercial production and distribution network.
