UPDATE On PCC Complaint. The Daily Mail, 7th October 2011

The original complaint can be seen here.

The Daily Mail has now corrected its article and added the following note:

“A previous version of this article said that smoking cannabis has been found to be a major cause of psychotic illnesses in those who are genetically vulnerable. In fact, scientific evidence shows that smoking cannabis could increase the risk of psychotic illnesses in those who are genetically vulnerable. We are happy to clarify this point”.

The corrected article can be seen here.

keep going peeps cause we in UK need this change so bad.why dont the goverment make there own and earn 6 n half billion a year from taxing it?it seems crazy to me that they havent already done it.legalize please for everybodys benefit.sureley they can see the medicinal side to it????if they cant then tell them to take there blind folds off and un-plug their ear muffs and actually listen to the facts..

      look at them squirm. pathetic.

‘Found to be a major cause’ and ‘scientific evidence shows it could increase the risk’ are two very different statements.
The difference between the first statement and the amended statement could potentially be thousands of people, in actuality.

Having it as a bullet point on the end of an already read news story is not going to re-educate those who have read the story beforehand and now believe the scientific ‘mistake that the writer made.

I hope you show this example at the Leverson enquiry Peter. This shows scientific misrepresentation (or ‘lies’ as I like to call it) and a major reason (or maybe it just increases the risk) why Cannabis users are looked upon with suspicion and disdain.

From a journalistic point of view, if you gets scientific facts wrong in a scientific article, it could mean that you don’t get the science bit of it or that you inept at putting scientific facts into your scientific article and should therefore be moved to a different department.

Personally I would just take you outside and fire you in front of your family!

Nice one Peter.Nice one CLEAR.This is like water dripping on a stone, eventually it wears away.Interesting, her comments on scizophrenia and cbd(an antipsychotic) are actually in conflict with what the Daily Mail said.Even my psychologists say that cannabis does not Cause sciziphrenia.Obviously you know if you keep this pressure up it will make them a bit more careful about what they print in the first place.

well yeah, too bad that terms like “could” (and “would” & “might” & “maybe”, etc.) have no scientific value because they are way to vague and therefore mostly used when there is no reliable data so researchers must use this kind of vocabulary when they can’t make a definite conclusion but are only able to speculate at best or worse: when they are just taking wild guesses…

Great win for clear :) Has anybody read this article http://cannapro.hubpages.com/hub/-The-Legality-of-Cannabis-and-uk-law

An article that most will agree in on the whole I’m sure..  one thing that is really getting me with many articles on Cannabis that I see is the lack of writing skills or in many cases just laziness. I can’t sea any policitions takin uz serioosely if we can’t even tipe things proply! It’s harming our case if we come across as lazy or uneducated. (I don’t know if you wrote this article Slickdude93 so don’t take offence).

If anybody is writing articles and would like me to proof read them before they are published then I am happy to do so, I’m no expert, but I understand British grammar to an acceptable level and I can spell. Just email them to come-on-ppl-learn-english *AT* georgelloyd.me.uk ;-)

      Peace.

“…Cannabis will be grown by licensed growers only…”  Slickdude93 – it already is – they are called GM Pharmaceuticals.  The last thing we want is the gov dictating who can and who can’t grow herb.  Everyone should be able to grow their own, within limits and licensed if really  necessary.

I didnt buy the DM to read it but im sure you needed a microscope to read it and they probably buried it in the back of the paper somewhere .

      Excellent work Peter!

they’re marking time while the legal drug companies get their production and marketing ready to go.  expect a major U turn in legality and even more draconian punishments for growers.  this will be a commercial crime in the future with penalties and punishment from Revenue and Customs.  they will justify their actions by demonising home growers and accusing them of producing polluted and ‘dangerous’ product.
they are not going to give in and we will continue to loose.

good work peter, i’ll continue to back up your letters to the press under my various names.

completely unrelated to the above but this has been brought to my attention and not sure if we have missed this one.. it was in the “health” section of the dail mail on or around the 7th April 2011.

      http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-179264/Cannabis-kills-30-000-year.html

did this one slip through the net?

I have checked clears archives and cannot find anything about the above and even though it was some months ago the fact that its still viewable online is something of a concern,

I think this story is from a few years ago.
It show’s us clearly how they lie to their eager readers and use scare tactic’s to misinform.

If you were to shout in someone’s ear ‘Cannabis kills 30,000 people a year’, you would expect them to be at first very shaken and to then interpret from your bellow that 30,000 people must have died to get that loud statistic but not so.

The second line, now whispered, speaks the lie quietly and says ‘ More than 30,000 cannabis smokers COULD die every year, doctors warn today.’
Well that’s a different lie altogether isn’t it?

They clearly just turned a tobacco health problem into a Cannabis health problem.
They could have just advised users to quit tobacco and toke pure and would have achieved something of some worth.
