19 Sep Draft Letter To Your MP

Please use this draft letter as a guide for writing to your MP. Remember, always include your real name and address (also your phone and e-mail if you have them). Use this as a guide, but don’t make it much longer, a short letter making a few clear points is far more effective than a long essay.

Draft Letter to your MP

Dear _______ MP

I am writing to you as a concerned parent/member of your constituency regarding drug policy, specifically with regard to cannabis.

You will be aware of the on-going debate regarding the prohibition laws and the need for substantial change, promoted by a range of respected people and organisations over the past year or so.

I am very concerned at the rising levels of crime associated with cannabis caused by present policy. The involvement of organised crime in the production of cannabis is causing many well publicised problems including extreme levels of violence up to and including gun crime. The product these unregulated and uncontrolled criminal operations produce is claimed to be far more harmful than traditional cannabis and there are no measures in place to protect children from the trade.

I welcome attempts to educate children about the dangers of drugs, however I suspect this will not be enough to prevent curious young people experimenting and therefore coming into contact with this dangerous illegal trade. Cannabis is well established in our society now and has been for a very long time. In attempting to deny this truth the present policy is creating a very dangerous situation.

I would like to ask for your support in demanding a change in UK drugs laws to:

1) Close down the street dealers and organised crime networks created by the policy of prohibition

2) Instigate a fully controlled and regulated commercial market to provide cannabis of known strengths (THC/grm), potencies (THC/CBD ratio) and purity together with age limits for purchase.

3) Provide proper consumer protection, particularly for vulnerable people.

4) End the damage to families and careers caused by criminal convictions.

Cannabis is not totally safe, nothing on earth is, but the harm caused by the present drugs policy both to the consumer and to wider society eclipses any harm the plant itself could cause.

I hope you will agree with me that it is time for change, this madness has gone on for long enough; for the good of us all, cannabis should be a controlled substance and taken away from the anarchy created by the present laws.
