Professor Les Iversen

The attacks on Professor Les Iversen, chair of the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (ACMD) are misguided, false and destructive.

I have been trying to get to the bottom of what happened at the ACMD’s public meeting last Friday. My namesake, Will Reynolds, clerk to the Council, has been on voicemail all week. Apparently, Les said that cannabis is no longer a issue for the ACMD because it has become so politicised. I know Les. I interpret this to mean that the Council has given all the advice it can and that successive governments simply refuse to act on it for political reasons. Les is a man of honour and integrity who we are fortunate to have in his post.

There are some very misguided people in cannabis ‘activisim‘. I hate the term anyway. Some people just want to be ‘active‘, against something, anything, without even thinking about it.

Les is one of the world’s greatest experts on cannabis. No one can challenge him in the depth of his knowledge, experience, understanding or expertise in the cannabis plant. He is a member of the cannabis science elite, founded by Raphael Mechoulam.

It is fantastic that we have a man of such great courage and integrity that he maintains a crucial role in the government despite the malfeasance, deception and corruption that he is subject to.

We should be venerating Les Iversen. Mind you, he wouldn’t want that. His discretion is what keeps a man who knows the truth in such a crucial , influential position.

Those who attack him are ignorant of his record:

  • Published more than 350 scientific papers
  • Fellow of the Royal Society
  • Foreign Associate Member of the US National Academy of Sciences
  • Key specialist adviser to the House of Lords 1998 science and technology committee which recommended cannabis on prescription and led to GW Pharma’s licence.
  • ‘The Science of Marijuana’, 2000, is one of the definitive works on cannabis and was updated in 2007: See here.
  • ‘Bringing Cannabis Back Into The Medicine Cabinet’, 2010
  • Full bibliography: See here.

I’ll show you exactly how subtle, yet powerful are the actions of our ‘man in Havana’ – double-0 420, licensed to tell the truth.

One of the most serious attacks on cannabis made in recent times was the Dunedin cohort ‘IQ drops eight points’ study ‘Persistent cannabis users show neuropsychological decline from childhood to midlife’, Meier et al 2012. It was given wall to wall, cross channel, multi platform media coverage. Few people know, because the media blanked it, that just four weeks later, in exactly the same journal, the Meier study was debunked – and who reviewed the paper? Professor Les Iversen.

Know who your friends are. It is time for the cannabis campaign in the UK to grow up.
