12 Sep NEWS RELEASE. Misleading Information On Cannabis From Portsmouth Director Of Public Health
CLEAR Cannabis Law Reform, the UK’s largest drug policy reform group with over 215,000 followers, has filed a formal complaint against Dr Janet Maxwell, director of public health at Portsmouth City Council.
The complaint relates to misinformation and scaremongering about cannabis which Dr Maxwell has been providing to the press and the BBC. She has been responding to a ‘cannabis picnic’ due to take place in Southsea on Saturday, 13th September 2014.
Peter Reynolds, President and elected leader of CLEAR, said:
“CLEAR strongly opposes irresponsible events which involve public use of cannabis. However, it’s not surprising that young people resort to such misbehaviour when they see people in positions of power providing false and misleading information. How can cannabis be so dangerous in Portsmouth when it is not in 23 US states, throughout Canada, Israel and every country in Europe except the UK, France and Ireland?
It is reckless and irresponsible of Dr Maxwell to mislead the public as she has. When young people see such untruths spoken about drugs they cease to take any notice of public health messages. Dr Maxwell is not speaking on the basis of medical or scientific evidence but as if she takes her information from the pages of the Daily Mail . We will be pursuing a complaint of misconduct and we will produce peer reviewed scientific evidence to contradict the sensationalist claims she has made. It is disgraceful that Dr Maxwell should be concerned in publishing such false propaganda”.
CLEAR Cannabis Law Reform is a UK political party which aims to end the prohibition of cannabis most urgently for those who need it as medicine. CLEAR also advocates replacing the anarchic mess of prohibition with a framework of regulation which would allow proper control of the product’s strength and quality while providing protection for children and the vulnerable.
CLEAR’s policies are based on independent, expert research carried out by the Independent Drug Monitoring Unit in 2011:
